Midterms and Shiz and Cinnabunnehs.

Firstly, the most important part:
funny pictures of cats with captions
see more Lolcats and funny pictures

Secondly, midterms. DiffEqs went pretty well; people that I know to be doing well in the class had the same problems I did, so I'm not worried. I got a 98% on my Psycholinguistics exam, and even though I'm fairly certain my professor didn't fail anyone, I'm still glad to have had that number written on my paper in blue colored pencil (I appreciated the blue colored pencil for reasons I can't describe). Proofs...well Proofs effing sucked. I worked on this thing from Saturday-ish to this morning, and didn't do any other homework between. It was feverish, I had many a mental breakdown over it, and now, after a ridiculous amount of effort that probably shouldn't have been necessary, it's over. I'm glad I can hand it in tomorrow. :). The only midterm left is for the Athenian Century. This will just entail some flash cards and a good stroke of spatial memory (to plot things on maps). And then...Halloween!

I'm going to be Link. It's going to be awesome. Apparently my mother thought I was going to be a Linx. Wouldn't it be cool if someone were Linux for Halloween? xD

Ramble ramble ramble; if Kline keeps serving potatoes I may die of starch-overload. I just can't deny them because I love them so much, especially in soup-form because I can dip my vegetables into them. :p

My brain has shut off
and I have a midterm tomorrow;
But I am not worried,

as a kitten and Jesus in the same picture will show me the way.

Actually, unless this cat is proficient at Differential Equations, it can't help me at all.
Mrow. :)

"To the Bard College Community:

Hunting Season has once again begun in Dutchess County. Bow Hunters are permitted to
hunt at this time. The use of shotguns for deer hunting will begin November 21st, and end
in early December (7th).
Please be aware of your surroundings when hiking the lands that surround the college.

Recommendations:
* If you will be hiking in the woods, add a bright yellow or red vest to your "Bard
Black" color scheme
* Carry a charged cell phone with emergency numbers programed
* Should you see a big man with a big gun, it is not the appropriate time to discuss your
thoughts on hunting. Make sure he knows you are a human being, using your gift of bipedal
locomotion to quickly leave the area.
* Report any sightings of hunters walking on Bard Campus. Most hunters are professional
and know they are not permitted on the grounds of Bard. They do sometimes wander
mistakenly on our property. While we appreciate the thought, NEVER challenge people you
believe to be trespassing, especially those carrying guns. Our brave security officers
will diplomatically handle this. Just call the 7777 emergency line.

The McGurk Effect

  • Oct. 12th, 2009 at 7:15 PM
Well, if I've lost the ability to blog about my social life (other than the fact that Zombieland was ridiculously awesome), then I should probably blog about how cool my academic life is.

Watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFPtc8BVdJk

Now close your eyes and replay it.

People perceive speech largely by what they hear AND what they see. This video suggests that it is a compromise. When you listen and watch, you should hear "da da, da da, da da". When you just listen (and not watch), you should hear "ba ba, ba ba, ba ba". What this person is mouthing is "ga ga, ga ga, ga ga". "Da" is apparently a compromise between "ba" and "ga".

Current Goings-Ons

This week the only thing I did was homework. I didn't go to fencing, I didn't hang out with anyone, I didn't watch any movies and I didn't go to the gym. I also missed out on a psychology lecture that I really would have enjoyed. Now that it's all said and done, though, I guess it wasn't such a bad week. I got a lot done and it felt good to know that I got everything done in a prompt manner. So woot.

I am kind of bummed about missing so many things, though. I've heard this saying about college: "Good grades, adequate sleep, good social life. Pick two". It's quite true. This weekend will be nice, though. I have a lot of plans with people and I'll enjoy myself. Then next weekend I go home!

I don't really have anything profound to say; nothing I want to say here, anyways.

Go Muse.

It's been a while since I've posted; I've been so ridiculously busy with homework and the like, and I really haven't been inspired to post any LJ stuffles.

I love college; even though I spend most of my time huddled away doing homework, I'm really interested in the stuff that I'm learning about this year, and I still have some time to have fun. My roomie is absolutely wonderful, and we're having a lot of fun. Fencing is going pretty well (I need to get better >_>), and I also joined Bard a Capella. That will be fun when I actually get a chance to go to rehearsals and stuff. Contemporary Ensemble is apparently starting this week (a good four weeks in...), which is good because I'll finally get back into the swing of playing my clarinet.

Which brings me to my next topic! I got to play with the Wahconah pep band today at the football game! I played tenor, and once I got the hang of it, it was really fun. I love the saxophone; I really wish I had one of my own. It makes me remember how much I love playing music. I need to get down to security and get access to the practice rooms in the basement of New Robbins, because I'm definitely not going to Blum every time I want to play, but I want to start seriously playing my instrument again.

This weekend home was wonderful! I didn't do nearly as much homework as I should have done, though. I suppose tomorrow's another day. :p

Sophomoric Splendids

I love Bard. I love eating on a regular schedule with lots of vegetarian options, and I love being a nerd!

What I don't love is all of this homework, but for now I've tamed it. Tomorrow is technically my Friday, because I don't have any classes on the real Friday! I also don't have to work this week, so my Friday is completely free. :D.

Not much else to say right now; I haven't done much yet other than homework. :p

Vacation(s)

  • Aug. 26th, 2009 at 7:11 PM
I'm back from my vacations! NYC was wonderful; our hotel was small but simple and clean. We ate a gazillion (accepted by word-check, fyi) different types of wonderful foods, including the best coffee I've ever had in my life at a little Italian place on the outskirts of Chinatown. A nice British lady helped us find good pizza, and on our first night we smoked cigars on a stone fixture right before the Manhattan Bridge and talked about theology (sparked by the jazz concert turned preaching at a little church near our hotel). Our only casualty on this trip was Glenn's beef and broccoli, left at a subway station when our last rendezvous with the Subway turned sour. <3

Connecticut was also nice; we spent most of the time at the beach or near the pool, and I got a pasta dish that had to be 5 pounds. We spend the last bit of the trip at Mohegan Sun, where my parents lost money and my Grandma won more than what she spent on the entire trip. xD

Pictures of both soon to come! :)

Time Flies

  • Aug. 17th, 2009 at 7:31 AM
I just realized that I'm going back to school in less than two weeks. I seem to remember a time, 3 months ago, when I was happy because I had 3 months of being home to look forward to. Then I worked two jobs. But I had a lot of fun, otherwise. :)

Four more days of work, and then NYC with Glenn! And then the Connecticut coast with my family! :)

Work Woes

  • Aug. 14th, 2009 at 12:48 PM
I'm going to be working until I go on vacation with Glenn, then I'm going on vacation with my parents, I have a day home, a day of work, and then I'm going back to school.

Holy shit.

I have a job lined up at Bard already, one that I'm pretty excited for because it's low-key but earns me some money. I'm also going to be keeping my job at Sears. I have two options as far as that goes.
1. I come home every four weeks to work a shift in Pittsfield.
2. I work in the Kingston store once or twice a week.

Problems with option 1: I have to come home every 4 weeks. I suppose that this could be alleviated by me coming home for a night, working, and then returning to school right after, or going to visit Glenn, or staying home for the weekend. It won't be so bad, but it's pretty often to return home. Also, my mother is threatening to take the car back once it snows, and I've promised Stacy the car for the months of March, April and May. Problematic.

Problems with option 2: I'd have to pick up another 6-12 hours of work a week, on top of another job and my schooling (which I have to remember is my top priority). Also, the problem of my car.

I think that I'm going to pick up the extra shift for admissions, with the stipulation that I can't be there every four weeks because I have to go home and work at Sears. The rest I'll have to come to when I get to it. It might involve me getting a new car, but that does not seem possible at this point in time. I suppose I'll talk it over with my parents, but that will just end in hell-flame. ._.

And all of my books aren't posted for next semester. I don't want to have to pay college-bookstore prices, but I may have to.

I'm making Green Bean Casserole! :D

Seriously? I don't care if this is real or not. It's amazing. And really weird. Perhaps more weird than amazing. ...definitely.

Oops.

I'm reading HP4. However, while reading the Harry Potter wikia, I had a strange urge to skip ahead and read a bit of HP7. I read 100 pages, starting with the trip to the Burrow and ending right before the wedding. The amount of anger, pain and irritation Harry has to go through in book 7 is really alarming to me. I outright sobbed when Hedwig died and then Voldemort was on the prowl. Flying.

Harry started out as an alright kid. Abused, partially emotionally crippled, but alright. He had hope of a charming future. Then all this shit happened, and I think he snapped: caved under the pressure. I'm starting to find that I can hardly blame him. He had to leave Ginny to save her life, and it hurt him just as much as it hurt her. He wasn't coming on to her on his birthday, if anything, she came on to him. And then Ron yelled. I feel bad.

The juxtaposition of fourth-year Harry to seventh-year Harry is alarming. Up until about halfway through Goblet of Fire, he's really not such a mean kid. And then it just gets worse and worse, up to the point where he's scuffling with Ron every two pages and getting into odd arguments with Lupin. I like Lupin. It makes me sad that they have such problems.

I feel kind of constricted inside. >_>

AND. Now I have to get back into GOF. Oops. :p

Stir-Fry and Wall-E!

  • Aug. 4th, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Bad things about being a vegetarian: malnutrition, lack of food in the house I can eat that I don't buy myself, no bacon.

Good things about being a vegetarian: Wall-E vitamins help to ward off malnutrition!

AWESOME THINGS ABOUT BEING A VEGETARIAN: I have to cook for myself! I made stir-fry and it was wicked good! :D

In other news, I'm going to see Dream Theater tonight and it will be awesome. I also got my DiffEq book in the mail yesterday and will be digging into that very soon.

And Harry Potter is still the ruling factor of my life. xD

Scar

  • Aug. 1st, 2009 at 1:10 AM
Oh, and they need to pick which side of Harry's forehead the scar is going to be on. And they should remember to put it on for the scenes where his face is in your face. I know that none of us are going to forget that he's The Boy Who Has a Big Honking Scar on his Forehead Lived, but...really.

HP3!

  • Aug. 1st, 2009 at 12:49 AM
I just finished watching HP3 (after finishing the book again yesterday). What a lovely adaptation! I mean, sure, random firebolt at the end was a little weird, but how wonderful!

1. Added dialogue for character development. Love love love. It adds a little humor, a little grace, a little style. SO GOOD.
2. Harry and Lupin have such a good relationship. I love friendship. I love friendship that arises from another friendship. Beautiful!
3. Though it would be nice if Lupin was like, "James was my best friend!" rather than "I was basically in love with your mother!"
4. And Harry grew attached to Sirius way too quickly (both book and movie). Their odd, often sadistic/masochistic sense of humor is similiar, though. I suppose it makes sense. Harry is like, "DADDY!" and Sirius is like, "BEST-FRIEND JAMES". I can't help but love it, though. Obviously they didn't have much time to really become super-buddy-buddy, and since Harry and Sirius having such a budding romance relationship later in the series is so important, I can forgive. Plus it's just so god-damn cute! :D

An issue that I have with both the book and the movie is the whole time-travel thing. For serious, it confuses me. I was under the impression that you do something, then you go back and change it later; not that the changes are in effect before the time travel takes place. But I suppose it could go either way, assuming that the actual time only happens once. (Meh?)

Couples of the hour!
1. Harry/Hermione. I can't help myself. They're such good friends in the movies (quite often after dealing with SRS (stupid-Ron-syndrome); it's something that I just don't feel from the two of them in the books. There's a connection.
2. Sirius/Lupin. I know...weird. Perhaps inappropriate. But the bromance is quite charming, in my opinion.

Vegetarian

  • Jul. 22nd, 2009 at 11:43 PM
To start, I'm going to say that not getting full support from the people I really want/need support from about this whole thing is pretty disappointing. It doesn't matter what my reasons are, or how long I'm going to try it. It's not dangerous if you do it right, and it's a healthy lifestyle that doesn't hurt anyone else. But I'm not going to dwell.

At the not-urging-but-being of Pat, I've decided to try being a vegetarian for one week. Just one week, and if I feel awesome, I'll keep going. If not, I probably will stop. At first it was just a curiosity, but now I feel this ridiculous urge to give it a shot. I have no qualms about eating animals (they are noms); I just wanna see.

I know that this isn't a very good reason, but it's reason enough for me. So forward, ho! :p
